A Key Player in the Delivery of Your Medications: United States Postal Service

In a recent newsletter titled, "Are Orders Being Delivered?", we advised customers of the current delivery times. These delivery times deviate markedly from our normal delivery times because of the coronavirus crisis. (For an overview of the issues the coronavirus crisis has created when it comes to supplying prescription drug orders, we encourage you to read the important update we circulated in March.)

The current delivery time from the point a customer places an order to delivery to the ultimate delivery address partly depends on whether the item ordered is out of stock at the time the customer places their order. As referenced in a previous newsletter, the significantly increased demand from consumers who've been stocking up on their prescription drugs has created disruptions in the pharmaceutical distribution chain worldwide, including supply disruptions within the United States itself. We just advised customers of the significant number of out of stock items, of which the list is growing daily. Once the ordered product has been sourced and brought into stock - which, depending on the product, may take a fair bit of time - it can be shipped.

Once shipped, the transit time to ultimate delivery is affected by several variables. How long parcels queue before being onboarded to one of the limited available transport aircraft, delays at air transit hubs where parcels are transferred from one aircraft to another, backlogs for customs clearance and the ability of postal agencies to deliver parcels to your delivery address all play a role too.

With respect to the ability of postal agencies to deliver, we've observed and have been advising customers that the United States Postal Service delivery timing is inconsistent at this time. On some days, it seems that parcels are delivered quickly to a particular area once they've cleared customs but on other days it appears they are taking much longer. On some days, some customs-cleared parcels deliver quickly while those on route to the very same area are much slower to be delivered.

We noticed a local Michigan media outlet reporting on what USPS customers in many parts of the country have been experiencing. According to the The Oakland Press, "Detroit District Postal Service spokeswoman Elizabeth Najduch said all mail in the Detroit area is being delivered, albeit not as regularly as before." She also states that "'[w]e appreciate the patience of our customers and the efforts of employees as conditions change on a day-to-day basis.'" In a Facebook Post to The Oakland Press, a Michigan resident, Jackie Hovey, wrote, "'[w]aiting for my medicine for 20 days out tomorrow'". Though her post was not made with respect to any order from NorthWestPharmacy.com, we certainly empathize with her concern.

The good news is that parcels, including those shipped by NorthWestPharmacy.com, are being delivered and have been getting delivered by USPS since the inception of the coronavirus crisis. This is very positive given the upheaval caused by the coronavirus to worldwide logistics systems. We believe USPS is to be commended, considering the difficult circumstances involved in delivering massive volumes of letters and parcels while being short-staffed. Several postal systems in other countries had to simply stop delivering international mail to their citizens altogether. Yet, USPS is out there getting the job done in the United States, albeit with delays.
