Drug Shortages Could "'Imperil … Lives'" Say Leading Doctors and Pharmacists
In our last newsletter, we discussed the triple whammy of the pandemic when it comes to pharmaceuticals - prescription drug shortages, potential price increases due to rising production costs and distribution/delivery challenges. We explained to readers that this is important information that is genuinely for their benefit so they can plan ahead when ordering their prescription drugs and we cautioned against the assumption that this is some sort of marketing circular with an explanation of why it is not.
In light of that, we wanted to draw your attention to a group of "leading doctors and pharmacists" who issued an open letter last week expressing concern that the shortage of drugs during the pandemic could "'imperil the lives'" of Canadians, as reported by one of Canada's largest news broadcasters, CTV News.
Warnings about the current drug shortages and the risk of more are not limited to Canada; they are coming in from regions throughout the world, including the United States.
In a previous survey of Canadian pharmacists during the pandemic, the majority of pharmacists surveyed said they "received reduced quantities of medication supplies on most or all orders … while 46 per cent of pharmacists did not receive any stock of certain medications.” In a recent television news story, a Canadian pharmacist lamented prescription drug shortages, 'across the board'.
Warnings about the current drug shortages and the risk of more are not limited to Canada; they are coming in from regions throughout the world, including the United States. Covid-19-related shocks to integrated pharmaceutical production systems have led to serious concerns being expressed by pharmacists in the United Kingdom too. Drug manufacturers, the American Medical Association and even the U.S. Department of Homeland Security have also voiced their concerns about the disruption in the supply of pharmaceuticals since the coronavirus crisis began. The Wall Street Journal is one of several media outlets reporting this issue and a member of Congress from Pennsylvania just penned an Op-Ed piece on this very topic.
Potential price increases to pharmaceuticals and further impacts to worldwide delivery logistic systems should also be considered in planning when to order your prescription drugs.
Take Advantage of Our Potentially Time-Limited Reduced Shipping Fee
It may seem counterintuitive with the slower delivery service from postal agencies during the pandemic, but we are incurring significantly higher shipping rates when shipping customer parcels. Yet we've reduced our shipping fee to help minimize the impact on our customers and make it easier to order their medications now. But we do not know what further Covid-19 surcharges or other rate increases we will face in the coming weeks so we may only be able to maintain the lower shipping fee of today for a limited time.
As a customer of NorthWestPharmacy.com, you have a distinct advantage during times of drug shortages as a result of our exceptional ability to procure difficult to source products and the good news is that NorthWestPharmacy.com has been successfully taking, processing and delivering affordable prescription drugs throughout the entire coronavirus crisis and continues to do so.
So please take advantage of the potentially time-limited reduced shipping fee and don't wait for more pharmaceutical shortages, product price increases or delivery systems to experience further delays as the coronavirus is spreading again. We encourage customers who may need medications in the coming months to place their orders now.
