USPS Update: "'Historic Volume' of Mail and Packages" Slows Down Deliveries
Our last newsletter provides critical information about delivery times that customers should be aware of. In it, we note the "capacity challenges faced by USPS" and our observation that "it is taking USPS significantly longer to complete last mile deliveries to many destinations after packages have cleared customs."
A recent CNN article titled, "A month after the holidays, some people are still getting Christmas packages in the mail", sheds some light on the matter.
"'I've been in postal for 35 years, I've never seen what I'm seeing," … packages are piled "'up to the ceiling'".
As our newsletter foretold back in August and September when urging customers to order well in advance of the of run up to the holiday season, USPS just told CNN that they have been dealing with a "'historic volume' of mail and packages" and that "'the Postal Service, along with the broader shipping sector, faced pressure on service performance across categories as it managed through a record of volume while also overcoming employee shortages due to the ongoing surge in COVID-19 cases, winter storms in the Northeast, as well as ongoing capacity challenges with airlifts and trucking for moving [the] historic volumes of mail'". In fact, "[m]ore than 39,000 employees out of 644,000 have tested positive for Covid-19, … representing about 6% of its workforce." The article also mentions that "hundreds of thousands of parcels experienced delays".
"'I've been in postal for 35 years, I've never seen what I'm seeing," said local postal union workers president Nick Casselli, as he told CNN that packages are piled "'up to the ceiling'".
"Things will -- eventually -- go back to normal."
Fortunately, the Postal Service provides some reassurance. "Things will -- eventually -- go back to normal. As the USPS makes its way through the massive holiday inventory, the service "'fully anticipates improvements in performance,' the USPS said in its statement to CNN."

So Many Reasons to Order Well in Advance
For reasons we have previously explained, the following is not a marketing pitch. Our newsletter has reported extensively on delivery slowdowns, international drug shortages and the increases in prescription drug prices.
Please stay ahead of as many of these as is possible while the next wave of the pandemic spreads as export bans, logistics disruptions and lockdowns exacerbate these various challenges. The best thing you can do to help secure timely delivery of your medications at the current prices is to order well in advance. This gives us and delivery systems more time, if necessary, to get your order to you well before you are going to run out of your supply at home. We encourage customers who may need medications in the coming months to place their orders now.
