Access to Medicines May Be Further Affected by the Coronavirus Crisis in the Coming Months

If you haven't already read our last newsletter, we urge you to do so. The newsletter explains how drug supply chains worldwide, including those in the USA, rely on active pharmaceutical ingredients (API) manufactured in China to be made into finished dosages in India.

CNN recently reported that imports of API into India from China are already down by 40% as a result of the coronavirus crisis. CNN spoke with one expert who "says there is also a fear among pharma companies that they 'may not have enough stocked-up APIs for their next set of commitments'", which underscores the risk of a forthcoming shortage of more drugs.

If Chinese workers at API manufacturing facilities cannot work, then API don't get produced. If API don't get produced, don't get transported to India or do but Indian workers cannot work to finish them into consumable medicines, then production levels to meet demand may not be achieved. Consequently, the availability of a vast number of drugs taken by people worldwide could be impacted.

The anticipated second wave of coronavirus infections amplifies the risk to drug production. More than 100 million people are back under lockdown again in China as a new cluster of infections has sparked fears of a second wave. Just last week, India's infection rates surged to the highest counts in the country since the crisis began. A top Canadian health official who's been widely praised for her handling of the coronavirus crisis, says a second wave is "inevitable" and that, "[w]e've never had a pandemic in recorded history that has not had a second wave", as reported by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation.
