Last week we discussed the cargo flight suspensions, lockdowns and massive Covid-19 outbreaks that are putting the supply of pharmaceuticals at risk again.
And back in January of this year, we explained how the weakness in the U.S. dollar is driving up the acquisition cost of prescription drugs. The purchasing power of the U.S. dollar has weakened substantially since then and it is putting significant upward pressure on retail drug prices that we expect consumers will see.
By way of just one example, in January, we lamented that in the span of the nine months ending in December 2020, the acquisition cost in U.S. dollars of Canadian drugs, which are priced and sold by wholesalers in Canadian dollars, went up by 9% due to a slide in the value of the USD against the CAD during that time period. But in the four months since then, the USD has tanked in value even more such that current acquisition costs in USD of Canadian prescription drugs are now over 13% higher than they were about a year ago.

We always hope for the best but plan for the worst and never assume the status quo will remain during these fast-moving and turbulent times so we ask our customers to do the same.

This gives us more time, if necessary, to procure what might be difficult to source inventory and get it shipped to you well before you are going to run out of your supply at home and before there are any increases in the price.
