"… The Supply Chain Will be Extremely Vulnerable in the Upcoming Months of the Pandemic …"
The University of Minnesota's Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy (CIDRAP) just released an article summarizing a white paper from a prominent global market intelligence firm which surveyed pharmaceutical suppliers about drug shortages.
"… respondents experienced drug shortages during the pandemic that equally affected COVID and non-COVID products …"
According to CIDRAP, "46% of respondents experienced drug shortages during the pandemic that equally affected COVID and non-COVID products, and 75% of respondents say they are constantly accelerating products to meet current demand."
They also note that, "[p]erhaps unsurprisingly, 70% of survey respondents said the supply chain will be extremely vulnerable in the upcoming months of the pandemic." (Emphasis added.)
CIDRAP advises that the report "come[s] during a time of shortages throughout the globe as COVID-19 exacerbates supply chain vulnerabilities" and CIDRAP states that the American Medical Association just declared this an urgent public health crisis along with noting how this is affecting other countries in the world like, South Africa, Canada, New Zealand and more. None of this will come as a surprise to regular readers of our newsletter though. We advised customers of all this well before the white paper was released - just click the above links or check your emails from us over the past few months to confirm this.
We haven't just kept customers up to date about drug shortages as the next wave of the pandemic accelerates. We have also warned about rising costs of the raw materials needed to manufacture drugs and other operating costs that could soon cause an increase in drug prices. This is supported by the feedback from respondents in the white paper. CIDRAP confirms, "[d]rug shortages have affected 20% of the respondents, and many have reported increased costs (40%) … ." (Emphasis added.)
We Keep You One Step Ahead Because We Don't Want You to Feel Let Down
When an important pharmaceutical product you rely on is out of stock everywhere or has increased in price, it is frustrating for you since it can impact your health. It is also frustrating to us because we know it is our job to get you the medicine you need at an affordable price. It is truly crushing for our team members to experience a customer feeling let down when it comes to something as important as their health and wellbeing, even if the situation is entirely outside of our control.
Our notices about the various factors affecting the supply, pricing and delivery of prescription drugs worldwide are for the benefit of customers so they can plan ahead. We do not want our customers to be in a position where the cost of drugs, the procurement of inventory, or delivery times could be more negatively impacted than they already are today and we believe it is our duty to diligently inform customers of the risk of this happening, especially in light of the accelerating Covid-19 infections in countries where drugs are manufactured and from regions where we source medications from.
… we tend to report factors affecting prescription drug supply, pricing and delivery logistics before the media does because our direct experience often means we are the first to know.

Help Us Keep You Ahead of Drug Shortages and Price Increases
So please help us help you to get ahead of drug shortages and price increases as the next wave of the pandemic spreads while logistics disruptions, export bans and lockdowns are expected to exacerbate challenges in acquiring inventories in the near future. The best thing you can do to help secure inventory for your medications at the current prices is to order well in advance. This gives us more time, if necessary, to procure what might be difficult to source inventory and get it shipped to you well before you are going to run out of your supply at home. We encourage customers who may need medications in the coming months to place their orders now.
