Drug Ingredient Prices Are Spiking Which Suggests Drug Prices Could Increase
We have advised customers about the heightened risk of more drug shortages across drugs in multiple classes as the next wave of the pandemic gives rise to new lockdowns and pharmaceutical export bans while the demand for prescription drugs increases like it did during the first wave.
It is important to be aware of the increasing cost of the raw materials used to make pharmaceuticals and its potential impact on finished dosages. The US, and much of the rest of the world, is heavily reliant on Indian made finished dosages and India is in turn heavily reliant on the Chinese raw materials required to produce those finished dosages.
… "[i]n the last three-six months, prices of APIs [active pharmaceutical ingredients] from China have gone up 20-35 per cent, according to pharma industry associations."
As reported in an Indian news magazine article titled, China Hikes Prices of Drug Ingredients; raises concerns in Indian pharma industry, "… China has hiked prices of key starting materials (KSMs), used for making medicines, by 10-20 per cent."
The article further notes that, "[i]n the last three-six months, prices of APIs [active pharmaceutical ingredients] from China have gone up 20-35 per cent, according to pharma industry associations." The authors conclude by saying that, "… any supply chain snag, as witnessed during the COVID-induced shut down in Wuhan earlier this year, or hike in these ingredients by China is likely to have immediate repercussions in the Indian pharma world."
We remain concerned that these and further price increases in raw materials could quickly cause the price of finished dosages of prescription drugs sold globally to rise.
