Drug Shortage Update: "A Matter of National Security"
As the next wave of Covid-19 infections accelerate around the world, NorthWestPharmacy.com has been informing customers about the heightened risk of more drug shortages as well as the spiking prices for raw materials and ingredients needed to manufacture drug products which could logically cause finished drug prices to soon rise.
Now the American Medical Association says "that a spike in COVID-19 cases has caused an increase in national drug shortages that threaten patient care and safety" and it is urging the federal government to consider drug shortages as "a matter of national security", as reported in Becker's Hospital Review. Becker's Hospital Review lists the AMA's top five drug classes currently shorted in the United States to be central nervous system drugs, antimicrobials, cardiovascular medications, ophthalmic agents and chemotherapy agents. (The last category should come as no surprise to readers of this newsletter who followed our report on a cancer patient in South Carolina whose cancer treatment was unavailable.)
… "'[w]e know that Covid-19 is likely to continue to have global impacts on medicine manufacturing and supply chains for the remainder of 2020 and beyond'".
Similar to the first wave of the pandemic, it is not just the United States that faces drug shortages now; this problem is a global one. New Zealand reminds us all of the drug shortage issues numerous regions faced during the first wave and which experts are concerned may repeat now.
In an article published Friday that is titled, “Medicine shortages could worsen as Christmas looms over busy ports", the New Zealand news outlet, Stuff, reports that, "[m]ost of New Zealand's medicines and medical devices are imported and a number of medications are out of stock, including oral contraceptives and antidepressants, as air freight movement collapses and global supply chains are disrupted.”
The Chief Executive of their government's medicines buying agency says, "'[t]hese are problems globally.'" She warns, "'[w]e know that Covid-19 is likely to continue to have global impacts on medicine manufacturing and supply chains for the remainder of 2020 and beyond'".
