Drug Shortages Spark Calls for Laws to Let Pharmacists Alter Prescriptions
Leading general practice physicians in the United Kingdom just issued a letter to their government requesting changes in laws so that pharmacists can make alterations to prescriptions when filling them in order to help deal with the rampant drug shortages caused by the coronavirus crisis, as reported last week in GPonline and the BMJ, which are both publications for medical professionals in the UK.
Drug shortages in the UK are of importance to NorthWestPharmacy.com customers because it is one of the countries from which we source the prescription drugs that are supplied to them.
Drug shortages in the UK are of importance to NorthWestPharmacy.com customers because it is one of the countries from which we source the prescription drugs that are supplied to them. Though we are already well aware, it should be of concern to our customers that GPonline reports that "more than 100 drugs commonly used in primary care remain unavailable in the UK, while the number of medications on a list of products the government has banned wholesalers from exporting has expanded to around 200 hundred products ." (Emphasis added.)
It is of further concern when it comes to pharmaceutical sourcing and production that coronavirus infection rates are rising in the UK, and also in countries like India, which the entire world relies upon to produce finished dosages of medications.
Drug Shortages Are of Concern Worldwide
Drug shortages are not just a concern for physicians and pharmacists in the UK. Covid-19-related shocks to integrated pharmaceutical production systems have led to serious concerns being expressed by drug manufacturers, the American Medical Association, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and pharmacists in Canada about the disruption in the supply of pharmaceuticals since the coronavirus crisis began. In this regard, we previously featured a Canadian pharmacist on the television news confirming prescription drug shortages, 'across the board'. Leading doctors and pharmacists in Canada have warned that the shortages "could … imperil lives." The Wall Street Journal is one of several media outlets reporting this issue and a member of Congress from Pennsylvania just penned an Op-Ed piece on this very topic. The publication, MDLinx for healthcare professionals in the USA, also recently highlighted the issue of critical drug shortages caused by Covid-19.
Get Ahead of Drug Shortages, the Impending Holiday Delivery Delays and Price Increases
As a customer of NorthWestPharmacy.com, you have a distinct advantage during times of drug shortages as a result of our exceptional ability to procure difficult to source products and the good news is that NorthWestPharmacy.com has been successfully taking, processing and delivering affordable prescription drugs throughout the entire coronavirus crisis and continues to do so.
But please don't ignore recent NorthWestPharmacy.com newsletters explaining what happens if your medication is out of stock when you place an order, the impending delivery delays with USPS as the holiday season approaches and the increasing raw material, operating and transport costs to manufacture prescription drugs which could raise drug prices. With all this in mind, please plan a head so you are not in a scramble to get your medications.
Take Advantage of Our Potentially Time-Limited Reduced Shipping Fee
It may seem counterintuitive with the slower delivery service from postal agencies during the pandemic, but we are incurring significantly higher shipping rates when shipping customer parcels. Yet we've reduced our shipping fee to help minimize the impact on our customers and make it easier to order their medications now to help them get ahead of drug shortages, pharmaceutical price increases and pandemic-related extended delivery times. But we do not know what further Covid-19 surcharges or other rate increases we will face in the coming weeks so we may only be able to maintain the lower shipping fee of today for a limited time.
